DREAM BIG for 2010!
2009 was a heck of a good year. I’ve heard some people say otherwise, but for me it was one adventure after another.

In 2009 I went to my first really big writing conference. I’d been to smaller ones, but this year I went to the Romantic Times Conference in Florida. I went with a goal, to make connections and friends, and to meet editors and agents. I went to sell Dark Harmony and Building Magic. In other words, I had a plan!
I think planning is the key to success. I created a plan last January, one that I felt with my last four years of writing under my belt, that I had a chance of accomplishing. I thought I want to get published. I learned my market, worked on my craft and met people. Now my first book is coming out in January, and my first novella will come out in a few months!
Other big events were more personal than professional I have worked on my connection with my daughters, and settled into my life finally, I think, after the shock of my divorce last December. We’d been split for over 4 years but it took that long for the divorce to be finalized. Now it has been officially a year of being divorced. I’m not dating yet (took the last year off), but the New Year is here.

This year, 2010, I am going to Cuba to celebrate my birthday. I am also planning a trip to Washington and possibly going to the RWA conference in Nashville. Not sure on that one yet, it costs more than my trip to Cuba! I will have my first book and first novella published. I am planning on writing 3 books and 2 novellas. I’ll be forging more connections with fans and friends, and celebrating every moment with my daughters. They’ve asked for books in their reading level, so I will give that a go, but I have to say it is a horse of a different color, completely different from the writing I’ve come to love, dark erotic romance. But I will do it for them even if they are the only eyes to ever see the words. And maybe, somewhere in all of the above I might meet someone special, someone just for me.

Workin' Wednesday
It’s Workin’ Wednesday, but today feels more like Whatever Wednesday. I should be doing NaNoWriMo, and I have been (my running word count is currently 4876 words), but today Io think perhaps That I am not feeling so well. I have a pain in my chest and am a bit dizzy. Of course I also have a healthy fear of H1N1, and am worried about that since several people around me in one capacity or another have been ill in the past week.
The truth is I do not have time to be sick. I work full time, and am just getting busy with the fall season. And my kids are very busy with skating lessons, swimming lesson and Sparks and Girl Guides. In fact tonight I have parent teacher meetings and Guides at the same time. Not too sure how that will work out. But I certainly don’t feel like writing.
However, I will write. It might only be 500 words today, but I will get some sort of progress. I HAVE to. I'm a writer!
Today is also the day that Nano reminds you to back up your work, so I will remind you of that as well. Buy a little thumb drive for heavens sake you can get them for less than $10. And I mean really, what would you do if you lost those hard earned words?
Now, I am off to drag myself to the water cooler before I croak. Good luck!

NANOWRIMO Approaches...
"I get a fine warm feeling when I'm doing well, but that pleasure is pretty much negated by the pain of getting started each day. Let's face it, writing is hell."
William Styron
And into the flames we go! Sunday brings NANOWRIMO (National Novel Writing Month) once again. I am terrifiedI am ready. It alternates. I’ve tried to plan this time, tried to identify my story, prepare my character sketches, and plot out my scenes. But I know I am kidding myself because I have already switched projects three times! LOL
First I thought I would work on a re-write of an old story, as so much of it is junk I will need 50,000 new words to make it right. Then I thought nope, I’ll start a new story, one I have been thinking about with a psychic bent. Then I got hit with an idea for a YA, and just as I was plotting it out I was reminded I need to get my butt in gear on my sequel to Dark Harmony Dark Melody. Okay, that was four project switches. Hmmm.
But I am sticking with it Dark Melody that is. I can’t resist the men Evan and Drake are calling to me. Who wants to write a YA when there are two full grown and delicious examples of manhood just waiting in the wings to enlighten my heroine, Ilyana, about the levels of love that only an immortal can experience?
Not me!

Reviewing Instinctive By Cathryn FOX and a CONTEST
Instinctive by Cathryn Fox An Eternal Pleasure Novel
Cathryn Fox (www.cathrynfox.com) delivers AGAIN. INSTINCTIVE, the first of her Eternal Pleasure Series offered by HEAT (www.penguin.com) brought out the animal in me! WOW, this one was such a great blend of the paranormal and erotica that I couldn’t put it down until I’d read the whole thing.
The story centers around a town called Serene only the people inhabiting this town are anything but peaceful or staid. Filled with shifters, vamps, demons and witches, the paranormal here hide from the rest of the world. Socialite Jaclyn sees only the potential for the place to improve her reputation and to prove to her family she can be professional enough to take over the family business. She doesn’t understand the darker side of the town until it is far too late, and her own sexual nature has driven her into the arms of Slyck, the ultimate virile fantasy man. Unfortunately he is also a panther shifter and he recognizes something wild within Jaclyn. He does everything in his power to bring that wildness out.
While there are darker tones to the novel, overall there is a feeling of warmth to the book that I have felt lacking in some erotica lately. I am really looking forward to the next book, which features a fantastic dominant hero, Kane. We get a taste of him in INSTINCTIVE, and I want MORE.
This was such a fantastic book I really want to share. I’ll be offering INSTINCTIVE (perhaps signed if I can reach the author!) to one person who comments on this blog with a recommendation of their own favorite sensual paranormal book.
MEOW!

Workin' It Wednesday
Nope I’m not strutting my stuff on some cat-walk, I am workin’ my latest novella. I am headed into the home stretch, the last 3 chapters of an erotic sci-fi. I just thought I might talk about the amount of work that goes into one of these short books. Most novellas run about 30,000 words about 1/3 the size of a full length single title book. Still sounds like a lot, doesn’t it? Well, it is and it isn’t a lot to write.
On the argument that 30k isn’t very long, we still have to fit a plot, character development, and in the case of an erotica, a full sexual arc for the couple (or groups!) of people involved, all in the 1/3rd size work.
On the other hand, 30K is about 120 pages, double spaced. Lots of room to have your plot go awry. To lose track of your character’s feelings. Plenty of room for multiple sex scenes, even too much sex! Enough room that there are details. No wham-bam-thank-you-mam’s in my novellas.
Before I begin to write a novella I create a full plot plan, the same as I would for a full length novel. This eventually becomes the basis of my synopsis. The only difference between the plot plan for a novella and a novel is once again length. For me, this amounts to a 3 page plan. Similarly I have a character sketch of the main characters usually there are no secondary characters important enough in a novella to rate their own sketch unless the novella is one of a series and the secondary character makes an appearance in more than one story. Finally I have a world building sketch particularly important for fantasy/paranormal/sci-fi stories where the world is “other” to our own. I describe the rules, the scenery the time and possibly create a dictionary of unusual terms.
The writing of course takes less time since I write approximately 1000 words on an average day. And the editing takes less time, but is still conducted with care (remember not to run with scissors same thing with your editing pen).
So a novella no matter that it is destined to be quickly devoured by its readers still requires vigorous planning and steady work. Now I’d best get back at it.

Changes / Challenges
The more things change the more they stay the same. Do I think that this is true? Maybe, about some things, I would say yes. Politics, red-neck jokes, possibly fashion.
When I consider what a person’s actions reflect about personality, I would definitely say that despite how people change their circumstances, their underlying character remains unchanged.
Example - Angela James departs Samhain. Now some people have indicated shock over how she “left her baby”. Some were even angered (a ridiculous reaction considering this is business!). I admit I was certainly initially surprised. But the underlying motivation, I think, is a personal desire for challenge. Read her blog http://nicemommy-evileditor.com/blog - you will see it there, she loved the challenge of changing jobs, and of building up Samhain, and she is going to love the challenge of Quartet.
Business policies - Within the publishing industry I have seen the role of Agent discussed repeatedly, and yet it remains the same under the verbal fencing.
Example My dear friend, author Renee Fields, continues her search for an agent. One rejection in particular stands out in my mind. The agent liked the ‘voice’ that Renee has for her novel, but the agent feels that it is difficult to break into this particular market. This is the conundrum of agents. We can’t get one until we have something sellable, but if it is that sellable we shouldn’t need one. Hmmm. Yet Renee’s search continues despite her success in her first genre.
And personally, despite changing the physical circumstances of my life, family opinion remains as the focus of my decision making.
Example I have changed my marriage status, my location of my home (even from country to country), the number of children I have, and certainly my age, and yet I still rely on my parental approval to evaluate my men. Their reaction to a potential mate seems to sneak up on me from the inside!
I guess the challenge is to recognize how things work and will continue to work and then create guidelines that establish how we can use those unchanging influence inside us, or out, to make our work and lives more positive.
Soooo. I am sending a proposal to Angela James, trusting that if she is interested, her need to meet a challenge will pull Quartet into a well oiled publishing machine, I will not bother to get an agent, and I will NOT tell my mother about my next hot date.

On Signing Contracts and Other Things
Amazing! Wonderful! What a summer I am having. Nope, it hasn’t been sunny. Nope, I haven’t even had one date (and this comes from one who considers dating a form of performance art) but I sure am having a great time. I signed not one, but TWO contracts! My very first two at that. I am so happy to announce that I have signed with eRedSage and that Theresa Stevens will be my editor.
As delightful author Christina d’Abo puts it I am doing the Snoopy Dance. The dance of joy!
It’s a beginning. I’ve been writing for several years, although a few of them were not good years you can’t write romance or erotica as you watch your marriage dissolve. murder mysteries, yes, and horrors for sure, but love stories and HEA are out. But it is like I am finding all that joy again that I discovered when I started to write. The really good stuff the internal happiness.
I don’t have a release date yet still waiting on edits, but what an incredible feeling of PROGRESS. Now don’t let me deceive you the writing game is one that requires PATIENCE. If you don’t have any but want to write, I suggest you go out and buy some right away.

Samhain Spotlight
Check out www.samhainbooks.com. At RT in April, Samhain discussed what they are looking for and how their company works:
Based in Georgia, Samhain publishes e-books and print books from 12,000 words to 120,000 words, although 120,000 does “push the limit” somewhat. Working with agented an un-agented authors (although 90% of their authors do not have agents), Samahin works not to flood the market with a writer’s work releases are scheduled about every 3 months, no sooner. Electronic releases over 50,000 words tend to go to print after approx. 10 months. Royalties are fairly standard for digital 30-40% and 7.5-8% on print books.
What are they looking for? Samhain releases 4-5 special calls each year for various anthologies, ie this year’s shape changer anthology check their call for submissions page. Currently they are looking for good sci-fi or futuristic romances space cowboys (think Firefly) where Romantic Elements make up 70% of the story and the science fiction fills the other 30%. Westerns were also specifically mentioned. E-books have a different audience, and Westerns still have a strong following. Erotic romance is still hot, MM, MFM etc, it’s all good! Nothing is currently being deemed “overdone”.
Samhain reminds us that their electronic rights are for 7 years, keeping the books on the “shelf” a long time. They say “new books sell old books” as buyers tend to look up an author’s backlist.
Response time is anywhere from 2-12 weeks, depending on the length of the book and the editor’s schedule. Editors are not genre specific all submissions go through an submissions coordinator and are then passed to the appropriate editor. If an editor feels the work is good but not for them, they will pass the work on to a different editor.
One final reminder if you submit to Samhain (or any publisher!), remember to add them to your “acceptable” list on your email! And, if you do get a rejection, do not be disappointed or offended by the form letter you receive all rejections are form letters, it isn’t personal.
On a personal note I’ve met Samhain editor Angela James a few times now and have found her to be very personable, and a sweet lady!

Book Review - YA - You're So Undead To Me
Now normally I wouldn't read too many YA stories, and I probably wouldn't review them on here. BUT...I met the author Stacey Jay at the RT Conference in April and I loved the gal. She is awesome! Plus that sweet Southern accent kills me. She also writes under another name some seriously hot stuff (will review that later!) but this one really caught me and I found that I HAD to read it, despite looming deadlines.
Reading for Teens: You’re So Undead To Me
Imagine you are back in high school. Remember the angst, the pressure to belong, your first crush and the homecoming dance in sophomore year? Now add a swarm of undead to your memories. Life could be easier if Megan Berry wasn’t a Zombie Settler by birth, and after losing her memories and power for five years it looked like the worst thing she would face in her teens would be possible rejection from the Pom Squad. Instead, her powers return on the eve of her first date with the school football hottie. So much for a social life.
As Megan’s powers and memories return, so does her childhood crush Ethan, now a junior level Protector. Megan has difficulties deciding if he is interested in her or simply concerned for her life. Things become more dicey when Megan becomes aware of a plot to ruin homecoming. The Elder Settlers don’t believe that the blackest voodoo could be being practiced by teens, let alone for the reasons Megan believes, but as the danger increases Megan must break the rules to save her friends, and the big dance.
With such dark subject matter Zombies! I expected a more sinister feeling book, but was delighted with the lighthearted approach that author Stacey Jay took to this high school horror. Megan’s mistakes and manner are just what you would expect in a teen who feels her powers are more of a curse than a blessing. Ethan is hot, but since this book is a YA, the heat level is just the right level of toasty. For the parents out there, Megan has a great relationship with her family, and learns from her mistakes.
With its edgy feel and easy reading, its kicking cover and fantastic title, I’d give this book four Lilies, right off the top of the coffin.

A Spotlight on Ravenous Romance
Ravenous Romance First spotlight on several E-Publishers at RT
While I was at RT I met informally with publishers from Ravenous Romance. They were quite nice, which didn’t surprise me based on my earlier guest blog with author Lisa Lane. Lisa works with Ravenous Romance and you can find her books on their website, www.ravenousromance.com in their erotic line.
Ravenous Romance publishes e-books and audio books in the erotic and more traditional romance lines, in every subcategory! For those of us looking to publish, they have great opportunities with their anthology series and shorts, and with their longer books in the 50,000-60,000 word length range. They accept un-agented and agented work, and have a 6-8 week response time. They do pay a small advance and typical e-book royalties. One note is their focus on MM romances (many written by men!) about 25-30% of their readership are estimated to be men, a different focus than many e-publishers.
I have to say I was struck by the quality of their covers, for a fairly new publisher they are awesome! Currently they are using Allen Penn for their photography, and the attention they are putting on these covers is wonderful.
What about print books? Well, currently they do license another company to handle the printing of the books, but only the gay and lesbian lines. More on this to come. For now they are really concentrating on their electronic releases.
Want to know what they are up to behind the scenes? Check them out as RavenousRomance on Twitter, Yahoo and Facebook.
