Technology and the Writer
Today my home desktop died. And that's no April Fools Joke. We are trying to resurect the beast, but it isn't looking good. Was it the Conflicker Virus? Who knows. Maybe it was installing all those updates yesterday. The big problem is I have no money to replace it. :( My writing continues as I have a laptop, but how will my kids play computer games? How will I get my email back? At least my writing and my photos are backed up. Mostly.

That said, someone told me at least I could keep writing with a pen and paper. Well I can't. I sit there and scribble, my handwritting quickly degrading to the point where I can't read it and my wrist is killing me, and I haven't even got 500 words. It just doesn't feel the same / look the same on paper. When I type I can feel the story and see it forming in front of me.

So pray with me folks, that we can pull off some sort of miracle here and get this thing up and running again. I need it - hey I just installed a big new desk that takes up a quarter of my living room for it!

Guest Blogeer Lisa Lane
Hi! I’m Lisa Lane, author of the dark, erotic vampire series The Darkness and the Night. First off, I would like to thank Lilly Cain for being gracious enough to allow me to come here today as her guest, the Red River Writers for organizing this blog tour, and those of you who have stopped by to join us, here. Over the course of the day, I will be giving away free copies of the first two The Darkness and the Night books, Blood and Coffee and Cosmic Orgasm, so make sure to leave a comment before you go.

Allow me to take you to a quiet, rural area in northern California called Southern County, to a place where vampires exist, where people can interact through dreams and Astral realms, and where magick and mystery lie just beyond every dark corner. Here, dreams can be every bit as real as our physical lives, and the Astral presents countless opportunities, for those who have both the knowledge and the natural ability. Before I move on, however, I’d like you to meet a few of the locals:

Karen: having been estranged from her family for several years, due to her father’s “unstable mental health,” her dark odyssey begins after she agrees to meet her parents and brother at the family summer home, an old Victorian in the middle of nowhere, in an attempt to reconcile.

Billy: born vampire of the Xavier family, and talented Astral traveler and dreamwalker, he first meets Karen after being appointed by his family to turn her, in retaliation for her father’s vampire hunting past. He ends up falling for her, however, the blood bond between them too strong for either to resist. Even when the two get separated, he holds their connection by visiting her daily in her dreams.

Mona: witch and talented Astral traveler, gifted with a Doppelganger (psychic double), and able to manipulate the Astral in awe-inspiring ways, Mona offers Karen unparalleled pleasures and generous gifts, in exchange for a grim and unusual request.

Anna: one of the twins; born with a Doppelganger able not only to travel all realms of the Astral, but also cabable of transferring objects and people between the Astral and the physical. For her, nothing is impossible, reality meaningless. Her Doppelganger requires lifeforce as sustenance, however, and Anna resorts to feeding it by practicing tantric sex on the Astral, offering wandering souls the experience of a lifetime ... for a price.

Tantric sex is worth the loss for some; very little compares to its unique ecstatic rush. The systemic surge of pleasure is like a moment of Heaven, the intensity pulsing and swelling through the core of one’s body, taking over every sense, and leaving every limb trembling and aching for more. Moreover, the temporary meshing of souls that comes with tantric sex allows for reciprocal pleasure between those engaged, building them both even further, and can create intense bonding between two individuals ... or allow for the stealing of some or all of one’s soul.

In Southern County, vampires can come in many forms, and not all of them drink blood.

I chose to use Astral and tantric sex as plot tools in The Darkness and the Night series for more than one reason, but the biggest was that I felt it was the perfect expression for a vampire series: how best to deal with a very unreal entity, such as the fictional vampire, than to create a world in which all of reality might be questionable? I found the theme fascinating, and so I ran with it, taking it–in my usual style–to the furthest extremes I could. Still, even Astral travel has its limits, and they vary greatly. For example, Karen is among the rare few who have the ability to travel the Astral freely, while Billy has the ability to invade others’ dreams and “draw planes” of his own design on the Astral. Sex on the Astral ranges from benign to tantric, but it allows for some fun and interesting experimentation with setting and positions. My favorite erotic scene in the second The Darkness and the Night book involves Karen on the Astral, making love to a galaxy. I questioned my sanity before I wrote the scene, wondering if I could pull it off, and I’m glad now that I decided to take the chances that I did with it. The scene is quick and intense, and it caught Ravenous Romance’s editors’ attention so greatly, they insisted on changing the subtitle from my original Blood and Shadow (which Lori Perkins originally changed to Blood and Tea), to Cosmic Orgasm. It’s quirky and unusual, but so it the novel.

I’m very excited with the feedback I’ve received so far, on both Blood and Coffee and Cosmic Orgasm. The muses wove some nice twists throughout the trilogy, pushing the “happily ever after” bar to its limit in the first book, but recovering nicely by the end of the second. I’m confident that readers will be thrilled with the character progression and final outcome for The Darkness and the Night, when Ravenous Romance releases the upcoming third installment, which I have tenatively subtitled, Nightcralwer and Succubus. Working on this series was a thrilling ride, and I can only hope that others enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Another review - wonderful light weekend read!
Another review - not an erotic story but a love story - very nice!

The Rancher’s Runaway Princess by Donna Alward

Lucy Farnsworth has lost her balance. Her roots have been heaved up with the loss of her mother and the discovery that her father is actually alive and the monarch of a far away country. Joining him as Princess is a promise she made to her mother, but her heart yearns for something simpler, something pure. Only in the company of horses does she find some solace. In desperation to prove herself to her father, she embarks on a journey to enrich her father’s royal stables by making an agreement with a successful ranch owner in Canada. The difficulty lies in working with Brody Hamilton, the ranch’s owner. He’s sexy, moody, and confusing.

Brody’s life has been anything but easy and he resents the people that play “princess” – his ex wife taught him that lesson all too well, abandoning him in the darkest time of his life. With the loss of his family, Brody took on the ranch by himself. Now he has an opportunity to really put it on the map – an agreement with a Royal stable. But the negotiation isn’t easy when the beautiful woman sent by the King is clearly hiding something. He can’t bring himself to trust another princess.

In keeping her identity secret, Lucy engages Brody’s suspicions. In turn he hides his difficulties from her. As the two work out their differences, they also find a sense of belonging, a bond that blooms with sensuality and finally love.

This book has a lovely flow to it – it pulls you along with the evolution of the characters in a way that leaves you with a smile on your face. Well written and descriptive, this book is a wonderful weekend read.

Gearing Up!
Now it is January 7, and I have accomplished two things. One, I convinced the guys at my full time job that since one of them had a girlie calander on their wall, I could have a hot guy calander. So I have hung my "Boyfriend of the Month" calander. Yummy!

Two: I have completed my annual goal schedule for 2009, laying out a plan to write and submit 5 works of fiction. :) Last year I did something similar, and I am fairly pleased with how it worked out. This week it tells me to complete my goal schedule, complete the edits on the first half of my new novella, and add another 5000 words to the total. :) So, step one, the goals, is done. Will I make it through the rest considering it is already Wednesday? I am not so sure. But I will give it a go. tongue

On a personal note, I have to wonder why it is that guys do not call when they say they will. Why the heck is that? I see the issue made fun of on the sitcoms, and it certainly is a matter of frustration. I know - I could call, right? Well, I did call and got a talk to you later, then no call. I sent an email and no response. Perhaps he is having a bad week, but I get the feeling that I am back into the dating ring again.

Starting a New Year
Okay, without sounding like Little Orphan Annie and her strong but young voice shouting out the words to "Tomorrow", I will use another familiar yet oh so true line - Tomorrow is another day with no mistakes in it. Happy New Year!

Now that I have that off my chest, and I have wished you all a wonderful new year (hope you all had lots of fun over the holidays, mine were filled with giggling kids, fabulous presents, and a blushingly new romance - one that exists not only one paper (hey I'll take my research where I can get it) but in an actual face to face kind of way tongue) I'll get on with the goals.

Every year I set a number of goals based on how old I am - the number being the same as the age. I have reviewed my progress, and since I consistantly achieve approximately one half of my goals this way, despite the number of them steadily increasing, I would say I am not doing too badly. Last week I spent some time laying out my goals, and I am delighted to say I have already achieved one of them!

Okay, it wasn't a writing goal. I remodelled my mother's bathroom over the week after Christmas while she was away, it was a surprise! She was so happy! And I realized, I am too. Happy with helping, with being busy, with my home life, with my writing, with my job and with a man that I am trying to get to know. Woo Hoo! Who needs goals? I could just continue on like this, right?

Wrong! I need goals. You need goals. It is only a matter of time before I get tired, and need those goals that I have written out to remind me of what I want this year. And so, after I log off tonight, I will lay out my writing schedule for the month. Goals. Need 'em, live 'em, love 'em. smile

I know, I know, what about the man? Okay, I have to admit that I was first drawn in by his body - the man spends way too much time at the gym. But will I hold that against him? Not yet!

Another review - This one made me sweat!
WOW, what a hot book folks! This is a good friend of mine's latest!

Sun Stroked by Cathryn Fox ties up the best of erotic escapism into three fantasies so hot you’ll wonder if you should have keep the air conditioner running this winter! I was so impressed by the intricate fantasy of the location – I could well imagine all these fantasies coming to life in a pleasure drenched spa like this (the O spa, need I say more?).

Three novellas feature three women who soon find that reality can outstrip fantasy as they indulge at the spa with three recovering military men. My favorite story was that of Lauren – a beautiful woman looking for a soul mate, not just someone who wants her for her body. Sometimes erotic stories can forget the emotional side of the relationship, but not here. Of course I loved the light BDSM of Danielle’s story, and the sheer sexiness of Abby’s tryst with Cody as she decides she needs more in her relationship than steadfastness. This book is a keeper!

Reviewing a few great books!
Over the last couple of weeks I have had a chance to review a few really good books! I will post a few reviews here over the next week. I have really beel pleasantly surprised and richly rewarded with great stories!

Broken Wing - Judith James

Broken Wing is one of the best books I have read this year, and I have read a lot of romances! This book is so well written, flows so smoothly that you will be drawn into Gabriel and Sarah's story as soon as you crack the spine! I loved the way the history of the time is seamlessly inserted, making me want to investigate this turbulent time more carefully - smugglers, pirates, hostages and all. I sympathized quickly with Gabriel who had such a terrible childhood - he was so amazed at Sarah's love that he could barely believe it, let alone understand it. Sarah is a woman who stands on her own in a time that to be independent made a woman immediately suspect, but she risks it all for Gabriel and never looks back. The story is a descriptive, sensual adventure and I am looking for book #2!

Not my usual read since this isn't an erotic book, I am very glad I took the time!

Ups and Downs
Gah I did it again, deleated my whole blog entry. All you need to do is press backspace instead of enter. ARGH!

There is a lot happening. We have Heather Osborn coming to visit the RWAC at the end of the month, and last Wednesday 10 of us sent off a total of 12 partial submissions (myself included, and as you could send two if you wanted, I did!). I sure hope she likes some of them!

Coming up in November it is NaNoWriMo - National Novel Writers Month. The object of the game is to get 50,000 words down on paper in the month. I intend to use my word count to finish Naked Truth, book two in the Confederacy Treaty series, a set of 4 novellas I intend to pitch as an anthology also to TOR. I will also write up a novella for Samhain's call for submission for their Cowboy Roundup Anthology.

Speaking of cowboys, last week I won a "Date with a Cowboy" with a local radio station and the rodeo that was in town. Woo Hoo I love those long lean cowboys! Yummy. Especially one of them - he looked great in the saddle at the Rodeo last Friday! And talk about beautiful blue eyes! So you can definitly expec a cowboy story from me, even if it isn't my normal route. I have to use that research up somewhere! tongue

Making Tough Choices
So I let one dream go - made the choice and broke off a relationship that was bound to go no where for me except to land into painful oblivion.

And I made a choice on what I am working on and have begun a serious re-write of Money Doesn't Count, a book that I am hoping Heather Osborn might find interesting when she is here. I am almost fiished my proposal for her, and then will begin a second proposal for Between Moons. I also decided to do a query letter for her workshop on my novel When Sin Comes to Call, and for her pitch session I will write a pitch for my book Sweet Ginger Love Charms. That way she gets to see (or possibly see as she might not get to read everyone's query letter) 4 examples of my stories. :)

Also on a possitive and decisive note, I decided I will partake in the NANOWRIMO again this year, and attempt to hit my 50,000 words by completing 2 novellas! Yehaw! That is of course unless some sweet editor decides she want s to see more of my work or would like a revision (yup, I am thinking of Kerry Donovan at NAL).

Working hard to stay positive,
Lilly

Priorities in Writing
With so much going on in my life - both in my personal life and in my writing life - I must begin to narrow my efforts on priorities.

In my writing I have choices: 1) I have a book sitting in the hopefully receptive hands of NAL, so I could choose to work on the sequel to this book in the hopes that they will be intrigued with my idea for a series.

2) I have Heather Osborn of TOR coming to vist my writing chapter in October and she has kindly agreed to accepting early proposals for her visit. So, I could work on my submissions (yup, count 'em, two submissions) to her.

3) I am having a lot of fun with my sci-fi novella series that I am working up for EC, so I could work on completing book 2 and then book 1 and the pitch for the series of 4 long novellas. Don't ask - I started on book 2 and then realized that there was a story before the story, and couple after it too!

4) Just because I am contrary, I could work on something new, just for the heck of it. But what good would that do me?

It is hard to make the choice. My friends reccommend that I get going and polish things up for Heather. That is certainly the most sensible thing to do as it is the only thing I have with an actual deadline. It just seems today at least to be the least fun. sad

I'll let you know what I do...goodness knows I never seem to do what I "should" do.

Priorities
Okay, so a friend of mine posted a quote on Facebook this week that struck a chord with me. I don't know who it was by, she didn't say, but it played on my mind for days. "Never make those people a priority who would consider you as an option."

I think that is something I have been doing lately. While this doesn't have much to do with my writing (or maybe it does), it certainly has things to do with my feelings about romance. Romance is still the heart of what I write. I believe in love, I just like it liberally iced with a layer of sex. laughing

It seems as though I have become somewhat cynical about relationships. I've always said that although I have been divorced, I still believe in love for everyone, that there is someone special for every single soul. Now I am wondering if perhaps instead that we, many of us, have simply made a bad choice and now have lost our chance. Perhaps love really is only for the young.

Then I think - what crap. It is only because I am with the wrong person right now - one that takes me for granted - that makes me feel this way! Love (and hopefully still lots of sex) is still out there for me. I simply need a better way to find it.

Lilly.
